Schalk is the co-founder and co-owner of Pieterse Sellner Erasmus TRM Tax Attorneys. As Managing Director, he guides a team of tax attorneys and professionals, and is especially equipped to deal with administrative law and constitutional issues over and above the normal tax law provisions and statutes. He is a practising Tax Attorney who specialises in tax dispute resolution, Tax Board and Tax Court representation, tax debt management and negotiations, as well as general tax law advice restructuring based on years of experience. Schalk is co-authoring a book on the Tax Administration Act with international tax expert, Dr. Daniel Erasmus. Schalk lectures in tax law at IITF and is also completing his LLD in Tax Law at Nelson Mandela University.
Prof. Dr. Daniel N. Erasmus

Prof. Dr. Daniel N. Erasmus is renowned and respected as an international expert in tax law. His 29 years of experience includes all aspects of income tax planning, Revenue Service administrative proceedings and tax litigation. As an international tax adjunct professor, and author of numerous textbooks on tax risk management, his vast experience encompasses complex domestic and international issues with a particular emphasis on procedural defects, domestic tax issues, and international tax; transfer pricing issues for multinational corporations and various international structures; and trusts in various jurisdictions that include the USA, South Africa and other African countries.

Eddie bolsters the strength of our team by applying his 23 years of experience in the tax industry. He rose through the ranks of the Collections Department at SARS, gaining valuable insights that provide practical solutions for our clients at Pieterse Sellner Erasmus TRM Tax Attorneys. Eddie is a registered Tax Practitioner and is particularly skilled in the nuances of tax debt negotiation, which includes payment arrangements, compromise offers, penalty waivers and remittance applications, suspension of payment and the acquisition of tax clearance certificates. He is also well versed in tax disputes, Tax Board and Tax Court matters. Eddie also currently lectures in tax law at IITF.
H Dip Tax & H Dip International Tax (Cum Laude)
Steve’s extensive experience in Employees Tax and Value Added Tax has been gained over the last 28 years, initially in the Public sector and then in the Private Sector. His practical understanding and ability to analyse the facts, understand the internal workings of SARS and his reputation in dealing with SARS Audits are well known. He serves as a member of the executive committee of the South African Payroll Association and has been involved in the Association for the last 15 years. For the past 18 years he has been presenting seminars and workshops for various organisations on the topic of employees tax and related matters. He has presented the Diploma in Employees Tax through the IITF and will be presenting similar courses in the future.

Mark Korten, is a qualified South African attorney with 25 years of commercial and tax law experience, focusing specifically on the jurisdictions of South Africa, Mauritius and certain sub Saharan African countries, servicing clients predominantly conducting business in Africa.
He has extensive experience in the consideration, negotiation, structuring and drafting of various commercial transactions including mergers, acquisitions, corporate restructuring, service agreements, leases, shareholders agreements, the establishment of various legal vehicles such as companies in numerous jurisdictions, local and offshore trusts, as well as hybrid partnership vehicles.
Mark’s specialisation in tax law relates to local and international estate planning, the international tax consequences of and South African exchange control issues relating to cross border transactions and international group structures, as well as tax experience relating to all types of transactions involving tax law in South Africa, including income tax, value added tax, capital gains tax, dividend tax, withholding taxes and the use of international double taxation treaties in tax planning.
Wynand completed his articles in 2012 and immediately afterwards joined Schalk Pieterse as an associate. Although having practiced in commercial law, general litigation, evictions and labour law, he spent most of his time on administrative law. His appointment as Director came in 2017 and with same the majority of his focus shifted to finances and management. Wynand subsequently made the move with Schalk to Pieterse Sellner Erasmus TRM Tax Attorneys where he mainly deals in Liquidations and Administrative law.
Elsje obtained her LLB Degree in 2011 and commenced her Articles of Clerkship at Annali Erasmus Inc. in Uitenhage where after her Articles was ceded to Daniel Saks Inc. in 2012. She was an Executive Committee Member of the Candidate Attorneys Association of the South Eastern Cape. After completing her Articles at Daniel Saks Inc. Elsje remained with the firm as a Professional Assistant and was later promoted to Associate in 2015. In June 2018 Elsje joined Strömbeck Pieterse Attorneys as an Associate in the Litigation Department where she worked as a Litigating Attorney until she joined the Tax Department of Pieterse Sellner Erasmus TRM Tax Attorneys in June 2019. Elsje specialises in High Court Litigation and Tax Law.
Lauren de Villiers
Lauren brought her 11 years of valuable experience in debt collection and civil litigation with a leading firm to the team at Pieterse Sellner Erasmus TRM Tax Attorneys. She assumed the role of Professional Assistant and immediately contributed to the firm. Her main focus remains on debt collection and litigation matters, and her skill set continues to evolve within our specialised team.
Jean-Roux van Huyssteen
B.Com Law, LLB (Cum Laude), Notary
Jean-Roux completed his BCom Law degree with a major in financial accounting at Nelson Mandela University in 2016 and obtained his LLB (Cum Laude) from NMU in 2019. During his studies, he obtained Deans List for both 2017 and 2018, and graduated top of his class in Law of Taxation, Human Rights Law, and Legal Practice. After completing his studies, Jean-Roux completed his articles at Joubert Galpin Searle in Gqeberha (PE) where he added value through the drafting of employment and commercial agreements, liquidation and sequestration applications, various court processes and gained practical court experience. Since joining Pieterse Sellner Erasmus TRM Tax Attorneys in January 2021, he has been heavily involved in implementing tax efficient corporate structures; utilising the corporate rules contained in the Income Tax Act for corporate restructuring, as well as tax debt management. He has also more recently started to get involved in tax dispute resolution.
Leanne started working at a law firm immediately after matriculating and it was there that she developed a passion for law. She worked in a variety of fields of law as a legal secretary and over the next few years, furthered her studies, registered as a candidate attorney and obtained her LLB. Leanne’s interest lies in the Tax Administration Act and she is currently learning the processes and procedures of tax law under the careful stewardship of Schalk and Eddie Sellner at Pieterse Sellner Erasmus TRM Tax Attorneys. She is also interested in commercial litigation and, under the guidance of Schalk and Elsje Meyer, is furthering her knowledge in this field of law.
During the course of Deoné’s studies, she developed a keen interest in tax law and administrative law. This henceforth shaped the direction of her efforts. Deoné is employed as a Candidate Attorney at Pieterse Sellner Erasmus TRM Tax Attorneys, and is thriving in her role within the firm. Her focus is mainly on dispute resolution as provided for in Chapter 9 of the Tax Administration Act, 28 of 2011. Her experience in administrative law allows her to swiftly detect and address any form of maladministration or non-compliance with the TAA and the rules promulgated there under.
Chris is a Candidate Attorney in the firm’s Gqeberha (PE) office. He graduated from Rhodes University with majors in Psychology and History. Thereafter, he obtained his LLB from Rhodes with distinction, full academic colours and was placed on the Dean’s List for each year of his LLB studies. His favourite areas of law are taxation, administrative law, company law and the law of trusts. He has been assisting the Institute for Accountability in South Africa (IFAISA), also known as Accountability Now, in the preparation of public interest litigation aimed at strengthening anti-corruption machinery of state in the Republic.
Stuart is a Candidate Attorney based out of the firm’s Gqeberha (PE) office. In his undergraduate studies at Rhodes University he majored in Political Philosophy and Legal Theory. Thereafter he completed his LLB at Rhodes in 2019, achieving Dean’s List for Academic Merit in 2018. He is currently enrolled for a Masters of Commerce (in Taxation). He has pursued a number of extra-curricular activities while at University, including the John. H. Jackson International Trade Law Moot Court Competition held in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2020 he went on to coach the Rhodes University team who advanced to the world finals held in Geneva, Switzerland. His chief areas of interest are the law of taxation, international trade, administrative law and general litigation.
Debbie has worked as a Personal Assistant for over 25 years. In that time, she has worked alongside management in a number of influential companies, including Rand Merchant Bank in Cape Town, and Tate & Lyle in London. Her addition to the team at Pieterse Sellner Erasmus TRM Tax Attorneys has contributed to an efficient office and an effective workflow.
